D. Densil Morgan – ‘Span of the Cross’

Wedi bod yn darllen ‘The Span of the Cross – Christian Religion and Society in Wales 1914-2000’ gan D. Densil Morgan yn ddiweddar. Yn rhannol oherwydd fy ymchwil i feddwl a dylanwad Tudur Jones ond hefyd jest oherwydd fy niddordeb personol a fy hoffter o waith D. Densil Morgan.

Des i at y bennod olaf neithiwr. Fel y tybiasoch mae’r hyn yr adroddir yn y llyfr yn weddol ddigalon, oherwydd adrodd hanes canrif o ddirywiad y gwna’r llyfr. Ond hoffwn ddyfynnu ambell i beth allan o’r paragraffau olaf sy’n galondid ac yn dangos yn glir fod D. Densil Morgan yn gyfoethog yn nhraddodiad Efengylaidd Paul, Awstin, Luther, William Williams a Tudur Jones ac yn ei dallt hi.

“Evangelicalism divorced from radical and wholehearted social responsibility will fail and will deserve to fail… In bringing the story to a close we can, I think, say that Christian witness has been at its best during the tweentieth century when it has displayed an evangelical commitment to the gospel in all its scandalous particularity and individual challenge; an ecumenical openness to all that is new and exiting in God’s vast creation, and a catholic breadth wich embraces the local and the universal, Wales and the world. It is in continuity with this, our Christian past, that we shall find our future”

Mae’r frawddeg olaf yna fel rhyw fath o narrator ar ddiwedd ffilm epic!
